Instagram

The tip

In Instagram's Account privacy settings, enable the last option. It may be labelled Allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results; the exact wording and location can vary by app version and account language.

The switch must appear enabled. With this setting enabled, search engines like Google may show eligible public photos and videos in search results outside Instagram.

Why it matters

For a business posting photos of products, premises, or activities, this setting opens a free visibility channel: content can appear in searches, for example in Google Images, and not just among people who already follow you on Instagram.

When the setting is disabled, links to publicly shared content may still be visible in search results, but Instagram will not make photos and videos available through this setting.

How to enable it

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to the company profile.
  2. Open the profile menu (top right) and go to Account privacy.
  3. Find the setting that allows public photos and videos to appear in search engine results. It is shown near the bottom of the account privacy options in the supplied screenshot; Instagram may move or rename it.
  4. Enable the switch.
  5. If you manage a business profile, keep Private account turned off: only public content can be eligible for search-engine discovery.

Enabling the setting does not guarantee that a search engine will index or display the content. Indexing and timing are controlled by the search engine and may vary.
